2023 UCI Nations Cup Cairo - A UCI outdoor wooden velodrome!?

The winter UCI track cycling season continued last weekend with a special Nations Cup in Cairo, Egypt. This UCI Nations Cup was indeed very special as it was the very first event of its kind to be held in Africa, and on a very interesting "semi-indoor" velodrome.

Why semi-indoor? Well, Egypt has the advantage of good weather and nice temperatures, where architects decided to build a wooden 250m UCI-spec track with a roof on top of it all, but without outer walls.

Again, some of the top riders were ready to attack the board, but with notable absence from the Australians, which had the National Championships also held the same weekend in Brisbane, Queensland. It's a shame that the calendar was not optimized to allow both these events at different times, especially with the Paris Olympics 2024 which will require teams to work on qualifications throughout the next several months. Or maybe we just are starving to see more Harrie Lavreyson versus Matt Richardson Sprint battles!
